Buxton Memorial Fountain detailAn ornate Gothic structure by SS Teulon, it celebrates the achievements of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton. Buxton was dedicated to human liberty, fighting for prison reform and the abolition of slavery, succeeding Wilberforce as the head of the anti-slavery party. The memorial was donated by Buxton to commemorate the emancipation of slaves. Originally on the edge of Parliament Square and Great George Street, it was moved in 1949 and re-erected in Victoria Tower Gardens in 1957. The bronze figures include Constantine, Caractacus, Canute. Alfred the Great, William I, Henry VII, Charles I and Queen Victoria. Victoria Tower Gardens was named after Parliament's Victoria Tower, and lies along the river between the Houses of Parliament and Lambeth Bridge.
